(NL) Ras is een integraal onderdeel geweest van het project van de Westerse moderniteit en blijft een beslissende rol spelen in het vormen van sociale normen, culturele ervaring en economische status in de hedendaagse wereld. In het licht van de vluchtelingencrisis in Europa, Brexit, het Trumps presidentschap en de wereldwijde opkomst van de Black Lives Matter-beweging, heeft de wereld een intensievere strijd gezien om de dynamiek van racisme beter te begrijpen en om de verstrikte relaties tussen ras, macht, ongelijkheid en economie te doorgronden.
 
Aan de hand van de ideeën van filosoof Achille Mbembe en de horrorfilm Get Out uit 2017 zal deze lezing het begrip "zwartheid" onderzoeken en beargumenteren dat het neoliberale kapitalisme de hele wereld geleidelijk aan "zwart" maakt - een van de belangrijkste redenen waarom Black Lives Matter een strijd is, niet alleen voor zwarte mensen, maar voor de hele mensheid.

Tijdens het eerste deel van de avond is Edward Akintola Hubbard vooral aan het woord. Tijdens het tweede deel nemen we de tijd om met elkaar dieper in te gaan op de besproken onderwerpen.

(ENG) Race has been integral to the project of Western modernity and continues to play a decisive role in the shaping of social norms, cultural experience and economic status in the contemporary world. In light of the refugee/migrant crisis in Europe, Brexit, the Trump presidency and the global rise of the Black Lives Matter movement, the world has seen an intensified struggle to better comprehend the dynamics of racism and to make sense of the tangled relationships between race, power, inequality and economics.
 
Using the ideas of philosopher Achille Mbembe and the 2017 horror film Get Out, this public lecture will explore the concept of “blackness” and make the argument that neoliberal capitalism is gradually turning the whole world “black” – one of the main reasons why Black Lives Matter is a fight not only for black people, but for all of humanity.

Edward Akintola Hubbard will share his expertise with us during the first part of the evening. During the second part we will take some time to go deeper into these topics.

Edward Akintola Hubbard

(NL) Edward Akintola Hubbard is assistent-professor Kunst en Maatschappij aan de Universiteit Utrecht in Nederland. Zijn wetenschappelijke interesse gaat uit naar Afrikaanse diasporacreolisatie en creoolse expressieve vormen, gotische culturen, gender en seksualiteit, experimentele etnografie en de kunsten in stedelijke contexten. De regionale focus van zijn onderzoek is de Afro-Atlantische - met specifiek de Caraïben en Kaapverdië - en de diasporagemeenschappen in Europa en de Verenigde Staten.

(ENG) Edward Akintola Hubbard is an Assistant Professor of Arts and Society at Utrecht University in the Netherlands. His scholarly interests are in African diaspora creolization and creole expressive forms, gothic cultures, gender and sexuality, experimental ethnography and the arts in urban contexts. The regional focus of his research is the Afro-Atlantic – specifically the Caribbean and Cape Verde – and its diaspora communities in Europe and the United States.
