Hoe gaan we aan de slag met intimiteitscoördinatie binnen onze podiumkunstensector?

Intimacy Coordination (IC) is een praktijk die ingeburgerd is in de tv- en filmsector. In een aantal (vooral Engelstalige) landen ontwikkelde zich parallel ook Intimacy Direction (ID) voor de podiumkunstensector, in nauwe samenhang met IC. Hier vind je meer achtergrondinformatie.  

Onder de werktitel SoS – Safer on Stage - lanceerden we in 2024 samen met Philine Janssens en Melina Stinson een pilootproject voor een psychologisch veiliger werkklimaat op en rond het podium. We vertrokken vanuit bestaande tools en methoden van intimacy coordination en direction voor het aanbieden van een aantal workshops om artiesten (spelers en makers) en omkaderende medewerkers, te versterken in het creëren van een Safer Stage.

Tijdens de sectordagen van het Theaterfestival en Kunstenpunt in september 2024 organiseerden we een korte workshop, waar Philine en Melina hun ideeën deelden, en de deelnemers alvast lieten proeven van hun werk.

In 2025 organiseerden we 3 gratis workshops van een volledige dag voor de ruime cultuursector, als onderdeel van actieplan tegen grensoverschrijdend gedrag in de cultuursector, met steun van de Vlaams Minister van Cultuur, onder de titel 'Staging the intimate, an introduction to consent-informed practices'.

Nieuwe formule anno 2026: Safer stage, wilder art

In 2026 bieden we een nieuwe formule aan: Safer Stage, Wilder Art - een lab van een dag, én een halve dag coaching op maat, waarop organisaties in verschillende fases van een creatieproces kunnen intekenen om te ontdekken wat intimiteitscoördinatie voor hen kan betekenen.
De start van het lab zal doorgaan op 20 oktober of 10 december.

We laten de werktitel 'Safer on Stage' los en gebruiken voor de ontwikkeling van onze acties rond dit thema verder de term intimacy coordinaton/intimiteitscoördinatie (wegens beter bekend, internationaal gehanteerd, makkelijker te vertalen naar het Nederlands dan intimacy direction).

Onze intimiteitscoördinatoren

Intimiteitscoördinatoren zijn professionals, met uitgebreide kennis van de sector, relevante opleiding en specifieke vaardigheden. 

Om als intimiteitscoördinator te werken binnen onze podiumkunstensector moet je strikt genomen niet gecertificeerd zijn, het is geen wettelijk beschermde titel. 
Wij hanteren echter wel de richtlijnen van de Amerikaanse vakbond SAG-AFTRA, die een officiële 'gouden standaard' en minimumeisen voor organisaties die IC-opleidingen aanbieden bepaalt.
Voor onze workshops werken wij samen met Philine Janssens en Melina Stinson. Philine Janssens werkt al 5 jaar als intimiteitscoordinator werk voor Opera Ballet Vlaanderen en nu ook bij de Munt Je kan hen ook inhuren als intimacy coordinator voor jouw project.

How are we making steps towards Intimacy Coordination in the performing arts sector?

Intimacy Coordination (IC) is an established practice in the TV and film sector. In a number of (mostly English-speaking) countries, Intimacy Direction (ID) developed in parallel for the performing arts sector, in close connection with IC. You'll find more background information here.  

Under the working title SoS – Safer on Stage – we launched a pilot project in 2024 together with Philine Janssens and Melina Stinson to promote a psychologically safer work environment on and around the stage. Drawing from existing intimacy coordination and direction tools and methods, we offered a series of workshops to empower artists (performers and creators) and production staff in creating a Safer Stage.

During the sector days of the Theaterfestival and Kunstenpunt in September 2024, we organized a short workshop where Philine and Melina shared their ideas and gave participants a preview of their work.

In 2025, as part of the Dutch action plan against inappropriate behavior in the cultural sector and supported by the Flemish Minister of Culture, we organized 3 free full-day workshops for the broader cultural sector titled 'Staging the intimate, an introduction to consent-informed practices'.

New format in 2026: Safer stage, wilder art

In 2026, we are offering a new format: Safer Stage, Wilder Art – a one-day lab plus a half-day of tailored coaching, which organizations at various stages of their creative process can sign up for to discover what intimacy coordination can do for them.

The lab will take place on either October 20 or December 10.

Good to know

We are dropping the working title 'Safer on Stage' and will continue developing our actions around this topic using the term intimacy coordination (as it is better known, internationally used, and easier to translate into Dutch than intimacy direction).

Our intimacy coordinators

Intimacy coordinators are professionals with extensive knowledge of the sector, relevant training, and specific skills.

Strictly speaking, you do not need to be certified to work as an intimacy coordinator in our performing arts sector; it is not a legally protected title.

However, we do follow the guidelines of the American union SAG-AFTRA, which establishes an official 'gold standard' and minimum requirements for organizations offering IC training.

For our workshops, we collaborate with Philine Janssens and Melina Stinson. Philine Janssens has been working as an intimacy coordinator for Opera Ballet Vlaanderen for 5 years and now also works at De Munt. You can also hire them as intimacy coordinators for your project.
