Hoe gaan we aan de slag met intimiteitscoördinatie binnen onze podiumkunstensector?

Sociaal Fonds Podiumkunsten startte in 2024 met "SoS – Safer on Stage," een pilootproject voor een (psychologisch) veiliger werkklimaat op en rond het podium. 

Intimacy Coordination (IC) is een praktijk die intussen ingeburgerd is in de tv- en filmsector. In een aantal landen landen (vooral Engelstalige landen) ontwikkelde zich parallel ook Intimacy Direction (ID) voor de podiumkunstensector, in nauwe samenhang met IC. Onder de werktitel SoS – Safer on Stage - lanceerden we samen met Philine Janssens en Melina Stinson een pilootproject. We vertrekken vanuit bestaande tools en methoden van intimacy coordination en direction, en onderzoeken of we ook andere good practices kunnen integreren, zodat het podium in alle contexten veiliger wordt voor artiesten.

We verkennen volgende pistes:

• het aanbieden van workshops om artiesten (spelers en makers), en omkaderende medewerkers, te versterken in het creëren van een Safer Stage
• een kader voor het aanbieden van een aantal mensen die als externe SoS-directors kunnen ingeschakeld worden bij een productie
• het uitwerken van een online toolbox, bij voorkeur met tools en best practices die ook ruimer inzetbaar zijn dan binnen de context van intieme scènes

Tijdens de sectordagen van het Theaterfestival en Kunstenpunt in september 2024 organiseerden we een korte workshop, waar Philine en Melina hun ideeën deelden, en de deelnemers alvast lieten proeven van hun werk.

In maart 2025 organiseren we 3 gratis workshops van een volledige dag voor de ruime cultuursector, als onderdeel van actieplan tegen grensoverschrijdend gedrag in de cultuursector, met steun van de Vlaams Minister van Cultuur.

How are we making steps towards Intimacy Coordination in the performing arts sector?

In 2024, Social Fund Performing Arts started "SoS - Safer on Stage," a pilot initiative aimed at creating a (psychologically and physically) safer working environment on and off the stage.

Intimacy Coordination (IC) has now been an established practice in the television and film industries for several years. In some countries (mostly English speaking),  Intimacy Direction (ID) in the live performing arts emerged in tandem with IC. You may get additional background information here. 

Together, with Philine Janssens and Melina Stinson, we have developed a prototype of the SoS (Safer on Stage) initiative: tools and methods for personal coordination and directing around intimate content. Following these first steps, we will consider including additional best practices to make the stage safer for artists in all contexts. 

The SoS initiative explores the following possibilities:

• Training artists and crew to create, and contribute to, safer stage environments.
• Personalized support by offering a process for hiring external SoS directors for specific productions.
• Creating an online toolkit, particularly with tools and best practices that may be utilized beyond the context of performing intimate scenes.

During the sector days of the Theaterfestival and Kunstenpunt in September 2024, we held a brief workshop in which Philine and Melina explained their thoughts and provided attendees a glimpse of their work.

In 2025 we hosted 3 full-day free workshops for the broad cultural field as part of an action plan against transgressive behavior in the cultural sector, with the Flemish Minister of Culture's cooperation.
